Thirty-six years ago, when I was 22 years old, I was living in my hometown of Norwalk, CT and I was trying to find my way in this life. My days consisted of working and trying to discover my passions while my nights were spent hanging out in bars with my girlfriends hoping to meet a guy. Not just any guy either, but the right guy. Ever since I was a teenager I dreamed about what kind of man the “right guy” would be and I had a good idea early on what I wanted my life to look like. For some unknown reason I always knew exactly how to make my visions a reality for myself.
In 1981, I began telling anyone who would listen that I was going to be married by the time I was 23 and have a child by the time I was 24. My friends and family all thought I was joking and would laugh when I told them this, but I wasn’t laughing. I was dead serious about what I was telling everyone because I BELIEVED what I was saying would come true. Interestingly enough, my mother always told me that the man I was going to marry would one day walk through my front door and by November of that year, that prediction became a reality.
On Thanksgiving day in November 1981, the man I would soon marry walked through my front door, as my mother had previously predicted. My aunt had invited him over because he was my cousin’s best friend and she always had a soft spot for him. He was practically family already. At the time I wasn’t really up to celebrating Thanksgiving, so I was just lounging around the house in my bathrobe when he arrived. It had been a while since I’d seen him, so I didn’t expect anything from his visit other than seeing an old family friend. Well, by the end of the night, after everyone kept going on and on about what a lovely couple we would make all day, he asked me out.
The following Friday night we had our first date. I had purchased a new outfit to wear and for the first time in my life I was really nervous because I just knew that big things were starting to happen for me. We had a great night and while sitting in a booth at the restaurant, he asked me what I wished for the most. I told him that I wished for an English Sheep dog, a great guy who would love and respect me, and for that guy to want to marry me. He leaned in to kiss me and said, “I grant you all three of your wishes.” My stomach fluttered with excitement and I felt all warm and mushy inside. I knew immediately that he was the guy I had envisioned all along. He then pulled out a small calendar from his wallet and we set the date for our wedding.
We married on May 15, 1982, five days before my 23rd birthday. Right on target. Six months later I got pregnant and by the time I was 24 years old, I was a mother to a beautiful baby girl. Again, right on target. I also envisioned owning a house, a boat, and that English Sheep dog I mentioned earlier. All of these dreams came true as well because I spoke about them as if I already had them in my life. I BELIEVED everything that came out of my mouth because it felt so real, so attainable. Many years later, this thought process would be referred to as The Secret and I am living proof that it works.
The reason I’ve told you my story is because I want you to know that by believing in yourself and in what you want out of life, it can truly happen. Dreams do come true. Thoughts become things.
Fast forward to 2017…I am 58 years young and living in South Florida with my husband. Two years ago I survived a widow-maker heart attack by driving myself to the hospital because my intuition told me to save my own life. What this event taught me is that life truly is a gift that we must cherish and that my true path is to live by sharing what I’ve learned in my life as a way to help others. The relationships that I have with my family and friends are my strongest asset. They are what make me stronger as an individual, but most importantly as a woman, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without this support system. This is why I became a coach – to be your support system.
